Mozilla & koodos team up on new paper
The most critical resource in the next era of AI isn’t compute or models, it’s who controls personal context
At this year’s MozFest in Barcelona, we hosted an urgent conversation about what may define the next era of AI: who controls personal context. In partnership with Mozilla AI and koodos, we examined the technical, social, and power dynamics shaping how context is captured, aggregated, and used. The discussion surfaced a clear tension between extractive models and a more agentic future where people retain control over their digital selves.
That conversation led to a new paper by the team behind Shelf, co-authored by John Dickerson, Jad Esber, and Apu Chitnis. The paper argues that personal context is becoming the next identity layer, and that the future of AI depends less on compute and more on who has access to that context, and under what terms.
